Considerations when getting cat health insurance

My cat just passed away recently. She was 19 and a half years old. This isn't a blog how I couldn't pay for her medical bills because I didn't have cat health insurance. In fact, she was in good health most of the time and was very easy to take care of. Bless her soul, she was such a good cat and I miss her a lot.

I know I was incredibly lucky as a pet owner as I didn't have cat insurance. I have heard of disaster stories of costly veterinary bills. That never happened to me but no pet owner ever wants to make the decision of putting their beloved pet down because they couldn't take on the financial burden. I take my responsibility as a pet owner very seriously to have proper cat care for my companion.

As I contemplate on getting another cat, for the peace of mind, this time I am going to get cat insurance for my new kitten.

In looking at cat insurance quotes, I do know that the premiums are cheaper for younger cats. There are different cat insurance plans depending on the level of coverage the owner chooses. Considerations for level of coverage depend on age, lifestyle of the cat (indoor vs outdoor cat) and whether it is a multi-pet household.

Since this would be my first time getting pet health insurance in a single pet household, I would only get first level coverage with the option of upgrading if necessary. I believe this is a good way for people unfamiliar with pet health insurance to test the waters.

Later on, I would be interested in looking at cat health coverage for annual checkups such as for teeth cleaning or anything that involves an overall pet wellness plan. I'd also be interested in knowing if there were any cat health insurance coverage for alternative pet treatments. To ensure a long and healthy life for my cat, I believe preventative care is a better solution. Not only do I think it would be cheaper in the long run, the health and happiness of my cat is all important.

After all, that's the least we can do to offer the best pet care possible for our furry friends.
